The British Airways Visa Signature is the branded credit card for British Airways that earns Avios points good toward reward flights plus other perks. The British Airways card can give you the boost you need to build up your Avios points for a dream vacation or help pay for business trips, and it includes a nice sign-up bonus that’s already enough for a reward flight.
Overview of the British Airways Visa Signature
The British Airways Visa Signature is issued by Chase and has a $95 annual fee with no foreign transaction fees, a nice perk when you travel outside of the country. The card earns Avios points on all purchases that can be used for British Airways reward flights. The card is a good choice for someone who flies frequently on British Airways or a partner airline, including Alaska Airlines and oneworld airline alliance partners. If you want more options for domestic flights, the British Airways card may not be the best option.
The card currently has a 50,000 bonus Avios signup bonus once you spend $3,000 during the first 3 months, but sometimes the signup bonus is higher. You can earn an additional 25,000 bonus points if you spend at least $15,000 during the first year.
Avios Rewards Program
British Airways uses the Avios rewards program which allows you to earn Avios points on British Airways flights. With the British Airways Visa Signature, you earn 3 Avios points for every $1 spent with British Airways and 1 Avios for every $1 spent elsewhere to help you boost your Avios balance faster.
You can use Avios points to pay for reward flights, in which case you will only need to pay taxes and other required fees on your tickets, or you can pay for flights with a combination of Avios and cash. For example, you can use $30 worth of Avios for a $30 discount on your ticket. This is a nice perk as most rewards programs are all-or-nothing.
Annual Travel Together Ticket
The British Airways Visa Signature also rewards you with one Travel Together ticket whenever you spend more than $30,000 in a calendar year. With this ticket, you can bring a companion on your itinerary for free when you buy a flight with Avios. Note that you still need to pay taxes and fees on the companion ticket and it must be used within 24 months of being issued.
The British Airways credit card offer is a good choice if you frequently fly on British Airways, but the card isn’t perfect. One of the biggest problems is the fuel surcharges added to reward flights. According to Chase, fuel surcharges range from $682 to $1,250 in coach. You can avoid the charges by flying on oneworld partners that don’t add surcharges, however.
If you just want a general travel card that allows you to choose your own airline and always get the best price on travel, the Capital One Venture Rewards card is a good alternative with 2x miles on all purchases that can be used as statement credits against travel expenses like airfare.
